Who We Are
The Economic Justice Committee is a new project sponsored by the Thomas Merton Center, Pittsburgh’s primary site for peace and social justice activism for nearly forty years. The Committee is dedicated to issues of labor solidarity, workers’ rights, and economic justice. We collaborate with many other local organizations that are focused on the same issues, including people involved in unions, community organizations, student groups, religious institutions, and many others!
What We Do
The EJC has three primary functions: (1) to maintain a communications network and an internet discussion-list among interested activists; (2) to organize quarterly educational and cultural events on issues of workers' rights, labor struggles, and economic justice; (3) to help mobilize support for focused actions related to the primary concerns of the Economic Justice Committee. We hold meetings bimonthly meetings on Sunday afternoons in order to fulfill these functions.
Example Events & Examples
- Participating in “shop-in” at Giant Eagle in support of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union
- Hosting a screening of the documentary Workers’ Republic with a presentation and discussion led by Al Hart, the editor of the UE (United Electrical Workers) News
- Publicizing and attending the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice backed by the AFL-CIO and NAACP
